Quarantine Database Problems when Upgrading from 4.4.568

Background:

 

When upgrading to v4.4.568, a database script should automatically be run on the Quarantine database to add a new column called confidence in tblMsgCatalog.  This column was added to resolve an issue with the “Delete all” function in the Quarantine Report.

 

 

Problem:

 

In some cases, where the User ID being used in the ODBC (e.g. SA) does not have the correct permissions, the automatic upgrade for the database does not occur.  If this occurs, clients must manually run the script XXX_quarantine_upgrade.sql, where XXX is the DB software you are using (e.g. mssql_quarantine_upgrade.sql for SQL Server).

 

Symptoms if the confidence column is missing:

 

  • No new items appear in the Console when Refresh is selected
  • There is a backlog in the …\Spool\Spam and/or …\Spool\Virus folders
  • No messages nor errors appear in the Console, under Quarantine, when Refresh is selected
  • There is a backlog in the…Spool\Invirus folder

 

 

Tracing the problem:

 

  • Open the ERR log, located in …\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>\log, and search for errors related to MODUSADM

 

 

Solution:

 

We are using Microsoft SQL Server but this solution applies to PostgreSQL, Access and MySQL, simply by using your DB client folder and the corresponding DB script.

  • From the Modus Console, stop the MODUSADM service
  • From a Command Prompt, run the mssql_quarantine_upgrade.sql script (located in …\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>\DBStructures\SQL Server\Quarantine)
  • Start the MODUSADM service

 

 

Microsoft Access Users:

 

99.9% of our clients who use Microsoft Access for the Quarantine database have not experienced this problem because the DB is local to the server.  However, if you do experience this problem, proceed with the following:

 

  • From the Console, stop the MODUSADM service
  • Open a Command Prompt and change directory to …\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>
  • At …\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>, type util upgradedb -q -p dbstructures <enter>
  • Start the MODUSADM service

 

 

Important:

 

If you use Modus WebAdmin (as Administrator) and there is a problem with the statistical information (numbers are incorrect) or if the page times out, proceed with the following (again, using SQL Server as an example):

 

  • From the Modus Console, stop the MODUSADM service
  • From a Command Prompt, run the mssql_quarantine_manual_upgrade.sql script (located in …\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>\DBStructures\SQL Server\Quarantine)
  • Start the MODUSADM service
  • This script adds a column, Domain, which increases database performance to display information more quickly in WebAdmin
