How-To: Enable Attachment Release from the Quarantine Reports

Product: All

Version & Build: 4.35.480 and below

Background:

By default, end users are only able to release attachments from the Quarantine Report when the messages are trapped as MIME Parsing errors or Corrupted Attachments, because the contents are considered damaged and, therefore, non-threatening.  As a measure of protection, end users do not have the right to release other types of attachments .

However, the administrator does have the ability to control and change what end users are able to release.  This requires making the following changes:

1. Change the Quarantine Report Template file:

  • In Windows Explorer, go to ...\Vircom\Modus<Mail or Gate>\Templates\Quarantine
  • Rename the existing English.xsl file to English.old
  • Save the attached English.xsl file to this directory
    • This new file provides the Release link in the Attachment table

2. Change the Registry settings:

  • Open the Registry and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vircom\Vopmail
  • Right-click Vopmail and select New - DWORD value
  • Enter the name QuarantineReportingReleaseVirus
  • Double-click on the new key to enter the Value data
    • The Decimal or Hexadecimal value you enter for this key will depend on the file type or combination of file types you want to allow for release
    • Each one has a numeric value so enabling multiple files requires adding up their respective values and entering the total amount

The following is the list of available file types and their values:

 File Type

 Decimal Value

 Hexadecimal Value

 Virus

1

0x0001

 Forbidden Attachment

2

0x0002

 MIME Parsing Error

4

0x0004

 Corrupted Attachment

8

0x0008

 Scan Fail

16

0x0010

Examples:

 - The default file types allowed for release are MIME Parsing Errors and Corrupted Attachments, so the default decimal value is 4 + 8 = 12 (0x000C)

 - To add Forbidden Attachments to the existing list, the value would become 14 (0x000E)

 - To enable all file types except Viruses, the total value would be 30 (0x001E)

Exceptions:

If the option Override server/domain default settings is enabled for the Quarantine Report settings at either the Domain or User levels, this disables the option to release attachments, even with the modifications above.  Only domains/users that inherit the server settings will be able to use this function.
