How-To: Configure the Modus Remote Console

Product: All

Version & Build: All

In order to use the remote administration console, both the ModusMail / ModusGate server and the remote access machine must be on the same LAN to communicate.  The remote console cannot be used via a VPN or another type of remote connection between the remote access server and ModusMail / ModusGate.

To set up the remote administration console for ModusMail or ModusGate:

1. Add permissions for remote access on the Modus folder:

  • The account used for remote access must be an Admin account on the domain
  • Make sure this Admin account belongs to the Administrator group on the ModusMail / ModusGate server
  • Make sure this Admin account has Full Control permissions on the root ModusMail / ModusGate folder

2. Add permissions to the Registry of the ModusMail or ModusGate server:

  • In the Registry (regedit or regedt32 from a Command Prompt), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vircom\VOPMail
  • Right-click VOPMail and select Permissions...
  • Give the Admin account Full Control permissions and propagate the change to the child keys by clicking on Advanced and selecting Reset permissions on all child objects...
  • Click OK.

3. RPC Services:

  • Make sure the ports for RPC Services are open
  • Make sure the RPC Services are running on the main server

4. Remote access server configuration:

Once the above configuration is in place, you may need to edit the registry manually on the remote access server to add the ModusMail or ModusGate server's site name:

  • Open the Registry Editor (run Regedt32 or Regedit from a command prompt)
  • Search for a value called Site
  • If Site exists, ensure that it has the machine name corresponding to the ModusMail / ModusGate server
  • If Site is not there, add it
    • Under Console, right-click and select New > String Value (type REG_SZ)
    • Call the new string value Site and enter the Modus server's machine name as the actual value.  The machine name MUST be all caps.
    • Right-click and select New > Key
    • Enter the Modus server’s machine name as the new key’s name.  The machine name MUST be all caps.
