  • Modus (Mail and Gate) scans mail in both directions: INbound mail from the Internet to local users and OUTbound mail from local users to the Internet
  • However, it's possible to create trusted users by turning off spam scanning on their OUTbound mail only, yet continue to scan their INbound mail
  • There are two ways to create trusted SMTP clients: by IP address or Mailbox Account


1. IP-Based Solution: Steps to disabling spam scanning for trusted sources

  • On the ModusMail administration Console, go to Security - Properties - Trusted Address List
  • Click on Scanning Trusted Address
  • Enter the IP addresses of your trusted sources, i.e. the local and/or public IP addresses of your mail server and the IP blocks that you own (or that your customers connect with).
  • You may enter specific IP's or use "/" notation (e.g., or wild cards "*" (e.g. 1.1.1.*).


2. Mailbox Account Solution: Steps to disabling spam scanning for trusted sources

  • In the Console, go to Anti-Spam/Spam - Preferences - Options
  • Check the option Disable scanning for messages sent by trusted source to turn off spam scanning for local users who authenticate using SMTP Authentication OR POP/IMAP Auth (a.k.a. POP before you DROP



If you Whitelist entire IP blocks, you run the risk of being placed on an RBL blacklist: a Spammer may be using one or several of the IP's within the block and his/her activities could cause your mail server's IP to be placed on a blocked senders list.  Although this rarely occurs, it is important to keep in mind.


Questions and Answers

Question: Should I use the IP or Mail Account based solution?

Answer: In most cases, the administrator will choose the IP-based method to bypass spam scanning.  With this method, the administrator simply needs to define the IP Class of his users - no user education is required.  By contrast, if the administrator wants to allow only a few users to send emails to the outside world without spam scanning, then the Mail Account Solution is the best and, most likely, the only solution (e.g. you don't know what IP the user will have).


Question: If I set up Modus to disable scanning for trusted sources, what will happen to scanning for viruses and forbidden attachments?

Answer: Disabling scanning for trusted sources only applies to spam content.  Scanning for viruses and forbidden attachments is not affected and will continue.  This reflects the multi-layer design of the moduscan engine.  The order in which emails are scanned for content is: 1) viruses, 2) forbidden attachments and 3) spam content (if this has not been disabled).


Question: Some of my users' outgoing messages are getting quarantined but only when sending from WebMail.

Answer: Add the WebMail server's IP to the Trusted Address List, using the IP-Based configuration.  If WebMail is installed and running on the same server as Modus, verify the IP it's using for SMTP connections: open the webmailsvr.ini to and add that IP (if it is not there).  If WebMail is running on a separate server, add that machine's IP to the Trusted Address List.
