How-To: Configure the Mailbox Directory on a Share

Background:
 
There are a number of different scenarios where you might want to set up a shared Mailbox directory for ModusMail / Gate:
  • You may want to store the data on a server different from that of Modus
  • You are installing more than one Modus server (Mail or Gate) and want to set up a central mailbox directory (in ModusGate, this is the location of the quarantine\inbox directory)
  • Or perhaps you already have separate Mailbox directories for different servers and want to move the data to a single shared directory
 
Step 1- Lay the groundwork:
  • Both ModusMail and the machine hosting the shared directory must be on the same domain or workgroup
  • Create the share (e.g. \\machinename\modusmailbox)
  • Make sure that a Domain Account exists in the Admin group on both Modus and the share machine
  • If it is a workgroup, make sure that you have an account in the Admin group of both machines
    • the account must have the same username & password
Step 2- Set up the directory:
  • Go to Services (Administrative Tools - Services) and ensure that all Modus services run as (i.e. Log on as) the account you've defined in either of the last two steps mentioned above
  • In the Console, go to System - Properties - Settings
    • At Mailboxes directory, enter the directory of the sharename defined above (e.g.  \\machinename\modusmailbox)
    • Open the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE\Software\Vircom\VOPMAIL
    • Locate vsQuarantineDestinationPath and double-click on it
    • At Value data, enter the share name\@Quarantine directory - e.g. \\machinename\modusmailbox\@quarantine
    • STOP and START all Modus services in the Console

All new messages will be delivered to and downloaded from the shared directory.  In the Gate, all quarantined messages will no be stored in the shared @Quarantine\inbox directory.

Once you're certain this is working, you can begin the xcopy to move the contents of the old directory to the share:

xcopy <oldmailboxdirectory> <sharedfolder> 

Example: xcopy "c:\vircom\modusmail\mailbox" "\\machinename\sharename" /e/s
