How-To: Change the Banner Greeting

Product: All

Version & Build: All

This article will explain how to:

  • Change the SMTPRS banner greeting
  • Change the POP3 banner greeting
  • Change or mask the machine name in the banner

SMTPRS Banner Greeting:

  • In the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPRS\Parameters
  • Right-click Parameters and select New > String Value
  • Name the new key Greeting
  • Double-click Greeting
  • At Value data, enter the text that you want to appear in the banner

POP3 Banner Greeting (ModusMail only)

  • In the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3S\Parameters
  • Right-click Parameters and select New > String Value
  • Name the new key Greeting
  • Double-click Greeting
  • At Value data, enter the text that you want to appear in the banner

Change or Masking the Machine Name

Warning: This option carries risks!  If your machine is in production - do not proceed!

To change the machine name in the banner requires 1) changing the default domain name used in Modus or 2) changing the machine/host name in the Network Identification properties of the server.  Either option will cause interference with mail operation if the server is already in production (e.g. problems with network communication, if changing the host name,  probelsm with DNS resolution and database connectivity problems where the database uses the domain name).  Again, we do not recommend making this change if the serveris in production.

If your goal is to hide the server's identity, the best option is to put a firewall in front of the server and configure Modus with an internal IP.  The firewall would mask all information about your mail server by displaying a dashed line in place of the banner.

Changing the machine name can be an option:

    • on a new server that is not in production
    • if the default domain has a dummy or unused name

    To change the name:

    • In the Registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vircom\VOPMail
    • Locate and double-click DefaultDomainName
    • At Value data, change the value to reflect the new name

Note:  this will also change the default/primary name in the Modus Console
